The Politic of Homage

Ever since year 1985, 'Oct 31'  has been commemorated as the Martyrdom of Late Smt. Indira Gandhi. On the fateful morning of Oct 31, 1984 two of her bodyguards Beant & Satwant Singh had pumped in bullets and had snatched the most charismatic leader of India from us.

Past many years the nation has been observing 'Aug 19', the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi as the 'Rashtriya Ekta Diwas'. To mark this very day for the last 22 odd years a number of distinguished persons from a pan India foot print have been decorated with the prestigious ' Rashtriya Ekta Samman'. In year 2007, I too have had the honors of being decorated with this prestigious award. Attached is the copy of the record.

This year (2014) there have been advertisements published by the Govt. of India to observe 'Oct 31' the birth anniversary of legendary Late Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as the ' Rashtriya Ekta Diwas'. With all due respects wouldn't it have been a more appropriate homage by being original in 'terming' the birth anniversary celebrations of Sardar Patel ?

Sardar Patel has and will always be a tall monument in the history of India' s freedom struggle.  It is unfair & unethical to dwarf his stature by such dank practice. It is good to pay homage to stalwarts but it is equally important to be original so that no dwarfing of stature is felt.
